Headaches

Suffer from headaches? What a pain! Headaches are uncomfortable, inconvenient, and once they’ve started they’re hard to ignore.

One of the worst things about headaches is relying on painkillers. Excessive use of painkillers can cause kidney, liver and gastrointestinal issues. But they also don’t get to the root of the problem. Why are you getting a headache in the first place?

Types of headaches

At Vitality, we like to get to the bottom of what’s causing you pain and fix it. This is the beauty of chiropractic care. We view the body as a connective system – everything has a cause.

Headaches are tricky. They’re hard to diagnose because there are many possible triggers. One way to find out what’s causing your headache is to establish what type of headache you’re experiencing.

Tension Headaches

Work in a stressful environment? You may experience tension headaches. Tension headaches are usually triggered by a buildup of muscle tension as result of stress or movement/lack of movement. These headaches feel like a dull, throbbing pain.

Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches are triggered by an injury or strain in the neck. Nerve endings in the cervical vertebrae become sensitive and the pain spreads to your head. Cervicogenic Headaches start at the back of the head and can travel to the forehead.

Sinus Headache

If you get a bit sniffly around spring time you may be familiar with sinus headaches. Allergies cause inflammation, causing pressure and pain behind the eyes and forehead.

Migraines

Migraines can be debilitating headaches, not only are they more painful but they can be accompanied by vomiting, dizziness, light sensitivity, vision loss and confusion.

Causes of headaches

What’s the cause of your headache? It could be one of many factors. Some of the most common causes are:

  • Neck injuries

  • Head injuries

  • Stress

  • Anxiety/depression

  • Alcohol

  • Overuse of medication

  • Allergies e.g. Hay Fever

  • Bad posture

  • Lifestyle (lack of movement)

  • Lack of sleep

How does chiropractic help?

How do we treat heachaches? This depends on their cause. We ask you a series of questions to get to the bottom of your headaches. For example, if we know your headaches began after a neck injury, we would give you a treatment plan for your neck, which would also reduce your headaches.

As holistic health experts, we also promote overall health and vitality through lifestyle changes. And we believe it’s through overall health that we experience less of these pesky pains like heachaches!
